Introduction REDCAR Manways are produced in a variety of sizes and types and provide safe access to underground equipment. They are made from Grade LM25 aluminium and have been fully tested by the Central Laboratories of Works Consultancy Services, now known as Opus International Consultants Ltd, in New Zealand. The are primarily, but not exclusively, used on Service Station forecourts as a means of providing access to underground tank connections, submersible pumps etc. As such, they have to be capable of bearing the maximum legal wheel loading and the test results show that they can accept static loads greatly in excess of this requirement. The different types allow for a variety of access options. Plain units are used where access is only required to service equipment, at say three monthly intervals. Service Stations, however, often need to have a smaller central or offset toby for access to a tank dip point and this can be provided. Other styles can have up to two tobies located to provide access and/or inspection facilities. The main lid is held in position by six bolts, each provided with a nitrile seal to prevent the ingress of water and an O-ring type seal set into the frame that operates when the lid is bolted down. Central Tobies are sealable and can be made lockable if required. The sealing device is fully detailed on the drawing of the Retrofit Sealed Dip Point Toby Lid in the Tobies section. Offset tobies are of the 'lay in' type providing easy access, but they have no seals and cannot be locked.

Installation REDCAR Manways are easily installed into concrete and need little setting up into position. Provided the sub base has been formed and prepared ready to accept the concrete and because the depth of the frame is usually equal to or about the thickness of concrete that would normally be poured, it can be put into position and tied to the reinforcing steel to ensure it does not move. Tie bars can be used if considered preferable.
